GALLIPOLI




Little town on the Salent coast composed of tho different sides: the modern one situated on promontory and the other one with the medieval colourful village built on a little island extending into the Ionio Sea. It's an agricultural and fishing centre with messanic origin and it was being unter the Byzantine rule. Presently it presents also structures of baroque style again The ANGIOIN castle, rebuilt in 500', rise up on the island It shows circular and angular towers. The castle is rounded of medieval village located along the panoramic way that follows the old walls lay-out. In the center of village there is the Cathedral of seventeenth century, in which there are also some works of artists of XVII and XVIII century. The civic Museum conservs some archaeological finds (massapic sarcophagus), paintings insiperd to the city images and a collection of natural hisory. Gallipoli has got its own tradition from Greek origin and is preserving its importance for different historic periods thanks to its privileged geographic place for mediterranean markets.
