Female Beauty, fashion and Jewelry in the Etruscan and Roman World
The Etruscan woman was famous in the ancient world, not only for her beauty, but the amount of freedom she enjoyed. According to ancient Greek texts, it seems, that they were allowed to p
rostitute themselves, before submitting to the ceremony of marriage, as a custom accepted by Etruscan society. This custom allowed them to probe the limits of their beauty, and made them more desirable and fascinating to their lovers.
They participated in the grand feasts, along with their male counterparts, as shown in the magnificent frescoes of the Tarquinian Tombs and of the sarcophagi (especially the lids of the same). They are always shown beautifully clothed, made up and decked
in jewelry
The Rom
an woman was more shy, more reserved and more controlled by a society which had given her the role of Mater Familia for a long time. However, this does not negate the marvelous refinement with which the Roman women are depicted in Roman art of the ancient
world, magnificent examples of which have survived, just like in the Etruscan world!
