Six of the best rooms in Rome

Hotel Santa Maria

This new, single-storey hotel occupies a large space on the west side of the Tiber, in the bustling Trastevere district-Rome’s underbelly, ancient, charming and brimming with restaurants and bars. It’s a quiet garden oasis, overlooked by balconies of the buildings that surround it.

The 19 chalet-style rooms are bright, and are thoughtfully decorated, with stone floors, wrought-iron furniture and cheerful fabrics. They are connected by an arcaded foothpath, and  each faces a pretty garden with tables and umbrellas, where you can breakfast on fresh, home-baked breads and cakes.
